So a common thing almost every human has asked once in their lives, why do i get a hiccup? and how do i make it go away? today i plan on somewhat answering these two questions and try to explain it a little( i had a hiccup for 10 minutes straight. -_-).
Why do they happen in the first place?
This is what i have found so far..
So our main character is Phrenic Nerve, this guy plays a key role in breathing which is controlled by our amazing brain. It makes your diaphragm contract and expand, letting your lungs inhale and exhale air. And at certain conditions our brain kinda messes up the signaling part and can cause the hiccups as we know. An irritated phrenic nerve can also cause long-lasting (persistent) hiccups.[1] Also as we all know hiccups can happen if we drink or eat too fast(my case most of the time).[1]
Basically,it happens when your brain kinda goes offroad for a second and causes your diaphragm to make that known "hic" noise
How do we stop it though?
So the million dollar question is how do we stop it?
For that i have some both scientific and commonly known ways. As most people would know, holding your breath, drinking water , try to get startled etc. the list goes on these might work but cannot be scientifically proven [2] for example my mother also says if u focus on something else it also can make it go away but biologically what is the %100 cure for this? Well its actually nothing really... hiccups usually go away on their own whatever you do [1] buut i did find something interesting named HiccAway [5], its a straw with a pressure valve at the bottom. Looks like a normal straw but you have to suck HARD to get water through it. They have tested this on 249 participants and apparently got a %92 percent success rate and is actually somewhat recent (2021) [3][4]. So either try that or just relax and wait for it go away
In conclusion..
Soooooo in the end hiccups are just our brains messing up something again and makin our diaphragm go wild for a while and if u dont have a nerve problem or other medical issues your hiccups will go away shortly. But personally i do like the distraction method it worked a lot of time for me but you can ofc let me know about your specific niche ways to stop your annoying hiccups...
